Famous People With Bipolar Disorder

1) Mariah Carey: Diagnosed in 2001 after a "breakdown", Mariah admits to have lived years in "denial and isolation" before she was actually diagnosed. This is a common experience faced by a lot of people with bipolar. What helped her was "I just surrounded myself with positive people and I got back to doing what I love which is writing songs and making music". In 2002, she released a song called My Saving Grace which expresses her resilience in facing her battles.

2) Mel Gibson: He first spoke up about having bipolar in a 2008 documentary called "Acting Class of 1977" which you can watch here. Named the “sexiest man alive” in 1985, his personal life made headlines when he berated a police officer during a drunken driving arrest in 2006 and pleaded no contest to domestic abuse charges in 2012.

3) Carrie Fisher: Most commonly known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars Movie franchise, she got diagnosed with bipolar at the age of 24. She has been a huge advocate calling for more research into bipolar disorder in and out of the studio. In 1987, she wrote her novel "Postcards From the Edge" from rehab after a life-threatening drug overdose. This novel was later turned into a motion picture by her in 1990. Fisher died of a heart attack in 2016.

4) Demi Lovato: In 2010, Demi booked herself into a clinic to treat addiction, bulimia and self-harm. It was here she learnt that she had bipolar disorder. Quite often, bipolar is misdiagnosed as depression because only the depressive symptoms are reported and the mania may not register as "out of the norm". She is an American singer, songwriter and actress famous for hits such as Sorry Not Sorry, Skyscraper and Heart Attack. She is also a part of a campaign called Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health.

5) Russell Brand:The amazing Actor was diagnosed as a youth and went along to have a successful career with hilarious movies such as Get Him to The Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He made his struggle with bipolar disorder a central focus of his persona, often referencing to it in his work. He lost jobs from both MTV and BBC for controversial remarks and also had a marriage with Katy Perry which lasted two years. Recovery: Freedom from our Addictions 2017 details his struggle with drug addictions.

Do you know of any actors that I have missed? Leave me a note down below so I can do another one of these types of posts. For me, I love seeing people that have recognised their bipolar as a strength and created successful careers and I believe that all of us can do that with the right management and support. Much love xx
